Mr. Milton Mixon
Milton Mixon was the oldest of 12 children born, on March 21, 1927, to the late Clifford and Jennie McFadden Mixon in Mixonville, Alabama. He was baptized at an early age at the First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Mixonville, Alabama.
Milton graduated in 1947 from Conecuh County Training High School where he served as point guard in the 1947/1948 1st championship basketball team. He also played half back position for the 1946 football team. After graduation, he moved to Niagara Falls, New York and was employed at the National Carbon Company. While there, he was the only African American who played on the company’s basketball team.
In 1951 Milton was drafted into the United States Army as a Private 1st Class. He was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and served the military honorably during the Korean Conflict until his discharged in 1953.
Milton married Emma Alice Washington on August 1, 1953; to that union they shared four children. He and Emma Alice moved to Mobile, Alabama where he worked various jobs; and eventually landed a career with the Georgia, Florida, and Alabama Transportation Company. He retired in 1991 after 27 years of loyal service as an outstanding truck driver. Milton was ordained a deacon at the Nazaree Baptist Church where he served faithfully until he and Emma Alice relocated back to Evergreen, Alabama. Milton joined the Second Mount Zion Baptist Church in 1997 and he continued faithful deaconship until his transition.
Milton enjoyed retirement as he frequently fished, raised cattle and grew beautiful gardens which he gladly shared on his namesake Mixon Barnett and Clifford Mixon Estates. He loved traveling and family vacations especially cruising several Caribbean islands and many long drives to New York, Illinois, and Michigan.
Milton, a life we loved, quietly and peacefully slipped away on Sunday, December 30, 2018. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Emma Alice, of 61 years; son, Milton Pearson; five siblings, Charlie Murray, Mattie Lou, Nelson Sr., Prince, and Revera Mixon McMillian and one step-brother, Alfred Willis. He leaves to cherish loving memories, his children and their spouses: Brenda Mixon, Alexander Gay, Kenneth (Beatriz), Chandra Mixon Hall, and Cledis (Munira) Mixon.
