Ms. Hattie Scott Barton
Born Hattie Gross, along with her twin sister Mattie, to Ola and Dovie Elizabeth Gross on December 15, 1926, in Evergreen, AL. Hattie attended Lambert School until the ninth grade.
In 1943, Hattie married John Lloyd Savage. To this union were born three children, one girl and two boys. Hattie was a committed Christian woman and very supportive of her church and loved working with people. Hattie regularly attended Sunday school until her health failed.
In 1957 she moved to San Diego to be closer to her twin sister. There, she started her own business; “The Southern Dining Room”. It had delicious soul food; all cooked by Ms. Hattie and the peach cobbler…yum, yum!!!
Hattie liked to sew. She would make her patterns from newspapers or brown paper bags. She also liked canning. She canned anything that could be canned such as watermelon rind, crabapples, and making wine and cha-cha.
Ms. Hattie was a member of the Eastern Star. She first joined the Ada B. Cleveland Chapter #71 in San Diego, CA and later in 1966, the Sojourner Truth Chapter #507 in Evergreen, AL. She was a member for 47 years. She was also a member of the International Benevolent Society.
As a member of the Gross Sisters singing group they harmonized as only sisters could. She was also a member of the SHUM Church choir.
Hattie lived bi-coastal, between San Diego, CA and Evergreen, AL. In 1971 she and her daughter Yolanda moved to Alabama where Hattie married J. B. Scott.
Granny had a variety of home remedies. Such as a teaspoon full of mustard for anything that ails you; especially heartburn, an onion on one’s chest for the flu or a cold, salt water sniffing for sinus problems and let us not forget WD-40 for arthritis.
She always closed her evenings out listening to Gospel music on the radio at night and prayer.
On February 6, 2013 the Lord called Granny Home after years of dedicated service serving Him. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Barton and sons, John Arthur and Herman Ola Savage.
She is dearly loved and cherished by her children, Bert Savage and Yolanda M. Bailey (David); step-children, Daisy Stokes, Angie Butler, Lizzie Jones, Fay Horn, Barbara Simmons, Clara Wilson, J. B. Scott Jr. and Eddie James Scott; grandchildren, Tammy Garcia, Tracy Davis, Tasha McCaskill, Cassandra Savage, Dr. Tiffany Savage (Kipton), Auburne Edwards, Berlien Lett, John Arthur Robertson and Synoria Turner; her beloved god daughter, Mary Woods; twin sister, Mattie Johnson (Eddie James); sister, Lillie Ruth Brown; brother, James L.
